I don't wanna be the one
I don't wanna be the one who tells you
That I don't know what I've become, or what I want to be
I know I'm always on the run
I'm always searching for the final moment
And I know that it will come
Yes I will be free, I will be free

Every little thing I promised you I'll make it come true
I'm not ready to stop
What is love, little pieces of the sun
It's bound to touch you, if you're ready or not

It's getting harder everyday, as I listen to the conversations
I'm getting tired of this place,
And I need to go
I need to go

All along I've tried to hide
Afraid that you would see right through me
All the pain and tears I've cried
I've never really told the story
Nothing's left to lose this time
I'm getting out the game is ending
Promise me at least you'll try, to do the same and leave with me
Ohhhh Ohhhhh Ohhhhh Ohhhhhh

MATTHEW GOOD - THE PRICE OF LIFE (VIRGINIA U. SHOOTING 2007)

I may very well receive a lot of scorn for this entry. I have spent the early part of this morning debating whether or not I should post this and have come to the conclusion that it is important enough to risk the backlash that it may very well produce.

As we’re all aware, over 30 innocent people were killed yesterday at Virginia Tech University. New reports are claiming that Cho Seung-hui, a 23-year-old from South Korea, was responsible for both incidents, negating earlier assumptions that the two incidents were not related. Students at the university have become angered at local authorities for not alerting them to the danger sooner, which may have either helped save lives or simply caused widespread panic.
That said, there can be absolutely no doubt that what took place at Virginia Tech yesterday was both a murderous crime and tragedy. The President was quick to comment on the situation, and even foreign leaders have weighed in, with British Prime Minister Tony Blair commenting…

“I would like to express, on behalf of Britain and the British people, our profound sadness at what has happened and to send the American people, and most especially of course the families of the victims, our sympathy and our prayers.”

On Saturday, in Iraq, 176 people were killed and 345 more were injured. Today’s death toll stands at 69 thus far. In all, hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have lost their lives over the last five years, with scores more wounded and maimed.
When was the last time the President of the United States issued an immediate statement about them, or, for that matter, the Prime Minister of Great Britain?
There is absolutely no question that the events of yesterday in Blacksburg will cause the student body and faculty considerable trauma. They will, no doubt, encounter emotional problems because of this incident, some for years to come. I am also sure that few slept last night or were able to concentrate on anything but the events of the day.

In total, there are some 26,000 students at Virginia Tech and around 10,000 members on its faculty, a total of roughly 36,000 people. The Iraqi population is roughly 25 million, with millions of those now refugees in neighbouring countries such as Jordan and Syria. According to the Iraqi Health Ministry, 70% of children polled in a study conducted last October in the Sha’ab district of northern Baghdad exhibited signs of extreme traumatic stress with symptoms that included stuttering, sleeplessness, voluntary muteness, bed wetting, and aggressive behaviour. These are children that routinely pass dead bodies on their way to school each day, have seen relatives killed, or have themselves been maimed. Given this statistic, one can only imagine the ramifications on the entire Iraqi population, be it children or adults.
In the words of Samuel P. Huntington - “the West won the world not by the superiority of its ideas or values or religion but rather by its superiority in applying organized violence. Westerners often forget this fact, non-Westerners never do.”

This statement is entirely applicable with regards to the vast chasm that exists between the perception of the price of life in the Western world as compared to elsewhere. It is as if those erased on a daily basis in Iraq are merely members of a sub-human class that warrants little attention or sympathy. Unless one views the inhumanity of their predicament first hand, it is almost impossible to put human faces on those that are ushered into morgues and hospitals throughout Iraq on a daily basis. But like those lost yesterday in Virginia, they too are human beings, ones that aspire to lead full and happy lives, to joke with their friends, to enjoy the company of their families, and to walk the streets of their country without having to fear for their safety or look upon the dismembered remains of their countrymen laying in the streets.

These are people, not animals, not some faceless, nameless, group of foreign robots that are devoid of fear and longing and love. And if the world is to stop for a day, or even a week, at the tragic loss of 33 students at an American university, then surely it must stop forever for those that must suffer in seeming perpetuity the horrors thrust upon them on a daily basis. For not a day passes in Iraq when scores are not killed, despite the fact that their loss is rarely, if ever, reported by the mainstream media.

If the events of yesterday in Virginia are to teach us anything, let it be that the price of life is universal. Let the memory of those lost mingle with the waters of those lost a world away, so that we might, at long last, begin to realize that there is precious little difference between us. Let our joint memories of them, of their faces alight with smiles, their eyes bursting with wonder and promise, become one. So that at long last we might be forged together in a unity that has for too long escaped us.
